Merz is criticized by Habeck for lacking in governance background.

Following the Solingen incident, CDU head Merz proposed a new direction in security and migration policy to the Chancellor, suggesting potential action without the involvement of the Greens and SPD. However, this proposal met with bewilderment from Vice-Chancellor Habeck.

At a Saxon Green campaign event in Leipzig, Habeck vehemently refused Merz's idea of declaring a "national emergency," asserting that it wasn't a viable solution and was rather reckless. Habeck further labeled this approach as "divisive rhetoric."

Merz had proposed the 'national emergency' declaration as a mean to circumvent EU law and send back migrants who had initially entered another EU country. Habeck argued that such action would create significant turmoil within the EU and deemed it a misguided proposition.

Habeck shared his belief that Merz's proposal stemmed from ignorance, lack of European or governmental experience or was a mere attempt to gain quick political gains. Regardless, the result is the same - an unrealistic demand that sets unmet expectations.

On the topic of East Germany's economic situation, Habeck acknowledged the benefits of investments, some of which were government-funded. Habeck commended the Green party members in the state for their relentless efforts, highlighting the growth figures in the East as a result of their work over the past three years.

Habeck regarded the upcoming Saxony state election on Sunday as a crucial event, emphasizing that if the Green Party fails to reclaim power with alliance support, the course of the discourse might shift towards hate speech. But, if they manage to secure a successful comeback in government, they can rewrite the narrative.

The Commission might need to address the potential implications of Merz's proposal if it's implemented, considering the EU laws involved. Habeck's criticism of Merz's lacking experience or political motives has not deterred The Commission from monitoring the situation closely.
