Merkel's longtime spokesman is dead.

It has been known for some time that Georg Streiter is suffering from terminal lung cancer. Now, the former deputy government spokesman and journalist is dying at the age of 68.

The long-serving deputy government spokesman, Georg Streiter, has died. The 68-year-old passed away in the night after a serious illness, as announced by the deputy government spokesman, Wolfgang Büchner, in Berlin. "We mourn the loss of a highly respected, friendly, and upright colleague," said Büchner.

Streiter held the position of deputy government spokesman from September 2011 to March 2018 during the tenure of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Prior to this, he headed the politics department of "Bild" and "Bild am Sonntag".

It has been known for some time that Streiter is suffering from terminal lung cancer. He leaves behind a son. Another son took his own life at the age of 27.

The government expressed its condolences upon the passing of Georg Streiter. During his tenure, the government heavily relied on Streiter's expertise in communicating government policies.
