Merchants registered a modest boost in sales during August
German retailers saw better sales in August compared to July, as per reports from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. They noted a 1.6% rise, both when adjusting for inflation and considering price hikes. When compared to August of the year prior, the increase was 2.1% in real terms and a substantial 3.1% when factoring in prices.
Different retail sectors saw varying results: The food sector experienced a 1.9% real increase from July and a 2.4% boost compared to August 2023. Non-food retailers, on the other hand, saw a 1.1% boost in turnover as compared to July and a slight 1.2% uptick compared to August of the previous year. The internet and mail order trade showed significant growth, with a 8.9% surge compared to July and a whopping 10.8% rise compared to August 2023.**
There were two consecutive months of declining turnover in May and June, but things turned around, with a 1.5% real increase observed in July compared to June.
