Meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping increasingly likely

US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are expected to meet in San Francisco on November 15. Both sides have made arrangements for the first meeting between the two leaders in a year on the sidelines of the next Asia-Pacific Economic Community (Apec) summit in the Californian metropolis, a senior US official and a Washington-based diplomat told the AFP news agency on Wednesday.

The date was not officially confirmed at first. However, Beijing and Washington have said that they expect a meeting to take place next week. As host, US President Biden had invited Xi to the Apec summit.

The last time the two heads of state met was in November 2022 in Bali on the sidelines of a G20 summit. At the time, they each described the talks as positive and explained that they were looking for ways to avoid conflicts between the two major world powers. However, new tensions have arisen in the meantime.

Relations between the two economic powers have been strained for years, with trade, human rights and the Taiwan conflict being among the points of contention. However, both countries are striving to improve relations.

Meanwhile, China reported successes in their joint efforts to combat global warming. Several days of talks between US climate envoy John Kerry and his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua in California were "successfully concluded" on Wednesday, the Chinese Ministry of the Environment said in Beijing on Thursday.
