US-election campaign - Media: Biden camp considers possibility of his withdrawal

In the face of immense pressure from his own party, US-President Joe Biden reportedly no longer rules out a withdrawal from the race for a second term according to media reports. The "New York Times" reported, citing multiple sources close to the Democrat, that the 81-year-old seems to be gradually accepting that he may have to give up his campaign.

The paper wrote that Biden has begun "grappling with the idea that he might not win in November and may have to step aside to accommodate the growing demands of many concerned members of his party." However, he has not yet made a decision.

Publicly, the President has so far rejected all withdrawal calls from within his party. His campaign team insists Biden has no intention of dropping out. However, the internal party pressure on him has increased significantly.

One of Biden's close associates told the "New York Times," it would be no surprise if Biden soon announces his withdrawal and endorses his vice president Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate for the November election.

The "Washington Post" reported, citing three congressional representatives, that Nancy Pelosi, a Biden confidant and former Democratic leader of the US House of Representatives, has told several party colleagues in Congress that she believes Biden can be convinced to withdraw soon. She also expressed serious doubts that he could win the November election against the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Biden is facing a party rebellion due to his advanced age and doubts about his mental fitness. Since a disastrous television debate performance against Trump at the end of June, various Democratic representatives have openly called for him to withdraw from the presidential race. Many others have expressed serious concerns about his chances.

Recently, even prominent Democrats have come forward with similar sentiments, and media reports suggest that leading figures in the party are now urging Biden to step down.

Biden is currently isolating at his private home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, due to a Coronavirus infection and is not holding any public engagements.
