Withdrawal from the national team - Matthäus: Müller should enjoy time at Bayern now

Record national player Lothar Matthäus hopes that Thomas Müller at least continues to play active professional football for German football for a while longer at the club level. "He can focus on Bayern now and then we'll see how it goes. He shouldn't say '2025 is it' yet, but he should enjoy the moments that are still ahead of him," wrote the 63-year-old in his Sky column. "He should feel good. I wish he stays with us for a long time, also in other roles."

Contract at Bayern runs for another year

Müller had previously announced his retirement from the German national team in a video on social media networks. His last appearance was in the home European Championship quarter-final against Spain on July 5. His greatest success with the DFB team was winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The contract of the offensive player at FC Bayern Munich runs until June 30, 2025.

"Müller was always exemplary. One you can look up to," wrote Matthäus about the 34-year-old. "He has earned respect from his teammates and opponents, but above all from his fans. His retirement is well thought out, I can understand his decision."
