Massive power outages in the western Russian border region of Belgorod
In the border region of Belgorod in Russia adjacent to Ukraine, a large-scale power outage occurred after drone attacks. "There are damages to telephone lines, in gas and power supply; power has temporarily gone out in a series of settlements," wrote Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov on his Telegram channel about the situation in the Grajworon district.
Similarly, it looks the same in the districts of Shebekino and Krasnaja Jaruga. According to local media reports, the regional capital Belgorod and the large city of Stary Oskol were also affected. The cause is reportedly damage to a power substation.
The regional portal Pepel published videos showing nighttime explosions at the power substation in Stary Oskol. It is one of the largest in the region and is also responsible for supplying power to the neighboring Kursk region. The governor of Kursk also warned of possible power shortages.
Putin, the head of the Kremlin, who ordered the attack on Ukraine two years ago and regularly shells Ukrainian cities and other civilian targets, started a new offensive in the Ukrainian territory of Kharkiv in May.
As justification, he stated that he wanted to create a buffer zone to stop Ukrainian shelling on the opposite region of Belgorod. The offensive, which was launched on a wide front, has meanwhile come to a standstill after about ten kilometers.
The massive power outages in Belgorod's border region, stemming from drone attacks, have also impacted the districts of Shebekino and Krasnaja Jaruga. This widespread disruption of power supply has also affected the regional capital Belgorod and the large city of Stary Oskol, causing temporary blackouts in several settlements.
The ongoing Ukraine war, with Putin's continuous attacks on Ukrainian cities, including the recent offensive in Kharkiv, has exacerbated tensions in the border region of Belgorod, potentially leading to such severe power outages.
