Illegal mining - Many missing at gold mine in Indonesia - 23 dead recovered

At an illegal goldmine in Indonesia, search teams continue to look for dozens of missing workers - and find more victims. According to Haji Asmar, local chief of the response teams in the province of Gorontalo, 23 workers have been recovered after a landslide last weekend, 35 more are still missing (local time in the afternoon). Over 50 men have been rescued.

The workers' camp at the mine on the island of Sulawesi was buried under tons of mud and debris on Saturday due to a landslide. Heavy rainfall preceded the incident.

Mines without safety standards

The heavy rain also frequently obstructed the rescue efforts. "The weather and terrain conditions are the biggest obstacles in the search," a spokesperson for the rescue teams said.

Illegal gold mining is widespread in Indonesia, where poor people take great risks to extract valuable mineral deposits. The mines often lack any safety standards, resulting in frequent fatal accidents.

  1. Amidst the ongoing emergency at the gold mine in Sulawesi, Indonesia, the operational force is grappling with inclement weather during their rescue operations.
  2. The storm that hit the region last weekend may have exacerbated the situation at the illegal mining site, potentially contributing to the landslide.
  3. Despite the challenges posed by the storm and the rugged terrain, Jakarta's emergency response teams have managed to retrieve 23 workers from the gold mine, with hopes of locating the remaining 35.
  4. The tragedy in Gorontalo province highlights the need for stricter regulations and safety standards in Indonesian mining operations, particularly in unauthorized gold mines like this one.
