Mannheim plans to honor the fallen police officer.
One week following the fatal knife assault on the Mannheim market square, the city prepares for a memorial ceremony. Commencing Friday morning, police have started to set up barriers on sections of the market square. Close to the market square fountain, situated in the center, passersby continued to lay flowers and light candles.
The Baden-Württemberg police have requested a moment of silence at 11:34 am, which marks the exact time of the tragic attack against Police Officer Rouven Laur, who lost his life. At this time, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is anticipated to join the citizens of the 300,000-inhabitant city in northern Baden-Württemberg for the moment of silence. Further expected attendees include Minister President Winfried Kretschmann (Green Party) and Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl.
A 25-year-old Afghan individual carried out the assault, targeting both participants of a Pax Europa demonstration, who criticize Islam, and a police officer. Tragically, Officer Laur succumbed to his injuries a week later.
