Man sentenced to 34 years in prison after murder of young woman
More than 34 years after the murder of a young woman in Copenhagen, a 54-year-old man has been sentenced to a long prison term. The Amtsgericht of the Danish capital found him guilty of stabbing the then 23-year-old woman in the New Year's Eve night of 1990. Therefore, the court sentenced him to eleven years and six months in prison.
The 54-year-old had denied the accusations in court. He claimed that he had been under the influence of alcohol and drugs and couldn't remember being in the woman's apartment. The court considered this explanation unlikely, as the defendant's DNA and a footprint were found at the crime scene. The man now has 14 days to decide whether he wants to file an appeal against the verdict.
The 23-year-old was brutally murdered in her apartment in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen on the said New Year's Eve night of 1990. Her body showed numerous stab wounds. In this case, investigations had been unsuccessful for years, but new DNA analyses brought a breakthrough more than three decades after the crime. The suspect was arrested in February 2024.
