Timothy Muller, 43, stands accused of issuing threats across state lines and attempting to interfere with, impede, or retaliate against a federal agent. The potential punishment for these offenses includes a maximum of 10 years in prison.

The name of the targeted FBI agent has not been made public, but a source with knowledge of the case told CNN that person is a member of Special Counsel David Weiss' team investigating President Biden's son. Muller's legal representative has not yet provided a response to a request for comment. The defendant hasn't entered a formal plea in court yet.

These charges arrive amidst an increase in violent threats, many of which are associated with high-profile investigations and trials. Attorney General Merrick Garland recently wrote in The Washington Post that the Department of Justice is facing a surge of "baseless, personal, and dangerous" threats, with their staff being "threatened for simply doing their jobs."

Muller's supposed threats against this FBI agent align with this trend. According to court papers, Muller phoned the agent shortly after a Delaware federal jury managed to convict President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, of three felonies related to gun possession.

In a one-minute voice message, Muller is said to have made ominous statements, like "You can run, but you can't f**king hide."

The message continued, containing falsehoods about the 2020 election being rigged, along with aggressive, expletive-filled threats. Muller allegedly declared that "the guns will come out, and we'll hunt you" and "slaughter you like the traitorous dogs you are in your own f**king homes."

He also allegedly sent several texts to the agent's phone, asking, "How's the family? Safe?" and using a homophobic slur, inquiring if they "really think you were going to disenfranchise 75 million Americans and not die? Lol."
