Man dies in open-air swimming pool after jumping 10 meters
A 23-year-old's outing to a swimming pool in Bremen ends fatally. After a dive from the 10-meter board, all help for the young man comes too late. The number of fatal drowning incidents this season is higher than usual.
At the Stadionbad by the Bremer Weser Stadium, a man died after diving from a 10-meter board. The 23-year-old initially resurfaced but made uncertain swimming movements, according to police. Helpers pulled him out of the water.
His health condition deteriorated, and first aid was administered, but to no avail. The man died, and the exact cause of death is unclear. Police have initiated investigations.
The number of drowning incidents in Germany is increasing, according to the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG). "We have recorded a slight increase in fatal drowning incidents over the past two years," said DLRG President Ute Vogt to the "Rheinische Post". Many accidents occurred because bathers overestimated their swimming abilities or behaved recklessly. "Alcohol is often involved."
According to DLRG, bathing in lakes and rivers is particularly dangerous. More than 70% of fatal incidents occur there. Additionally, accidents happen in canals, streams, and other inland waters. In the North and Baltic Seas, the association recorded around six percent of drowning cases. In the first seven months of this year, at least 253 people died in Germany from bathing and water-related incidents, which is 35 more than in the same period last year, as reported by DLRG in Düsseldorf.
The unfortunate incident took place at Bremen's Stadionbad, located near the Bremer Weser Stadium. Despite being rescued, the 23-year-old's condition worsened, and he tragically passed away at the pool.
