A man, who is believed to have been fatally stabbed during an alleged attack on Federal Police officers in Mittelfranken, died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to a spokeswoman for the Nuremberg-Furth Prosecutor's Office.

The 34-year-old Iranian is suspected of attacking the officers with a knife at the S-Bahnhof in Lauf an der Pegnitz near Nuremberg on the previous Sunday. When the three officers got out of their patrol car, he allegedly attacked them with a knife. One of the Federal Police officers shot in self-defense. The man died from his injuries.

The exact circumstances of the incident remain unclear and are part of the investigation, the spokeswoman added. A knife was secured at the scene and is now being examined.

According to reports, the deceased is said to be a permitted asylum seeker who has previously come to the attention of the criminal justice system for various offenses and has also been legally sentenced. The spokeswoman did not specify which offenses these were. According to information from the German Press Agency, he was notably known for resisting enforcement officers.
