Man burns to death under bridge: Police assume foul play

Passers-by have discovered a man on fire under a pedestrian bridge in Munich's English Garden. Several witnesses had tried to extinguish the man, the police said on Friday. However, an emergency doctor was only able to determine the man's death on Thursday evening. The criminal investigation department investigated a homicide.

Examinations of the body revealed that the man had died as a result of "outside influence", a police spokesman said on Friday. For tactical reasons, he could not give any details at present. Investigations are now the responsibility of police department 11, whose area of responsibility also includes intentional homicides.

The investigators suspected that the deceased could be someone from the homeless milieu. However, he could not yet be identified.

Passers-by reported the incident on Thursday shortly before 10 p.m. under a pedestrian bridge on the Mittlerer Ring at the edge of the English Garden. The police were looking for witnesses.

Given the circumstances, the English Garden has become a place of interest for the investigation due to the unexpected emergency. Furthermore, the incident might not be an isolated case of crime in the area.
