Majority of European companies suffer from skills shortage
According to a survey, a clear majority of companies in the European Union cannot find enough trained employees. Almost two thirds of small and medium-sized companies stated in the published Euro Barometer that the shortage of skilled workers was a serious problem for their business. For large companies with more than 250 employees, the figure is more than 70 percent.
According to the survey, the greatest shortage is in technical professions such as laboratory technicians and mechanics, followed by customer service professions. According to the study, understaffing leads to a higher workload for employees in around half of all small and medium-sized companies. Around 30 percent of companies anticipate a drop in turnover or problems with further growth due to the shortage of skilled workers.
The Euro Barometer survey revealed that over two-thirds of small and medium-sized European companies identify skills shortage as a major issue, while large companies with over 250 employees report a figure of over 70%. The study also indicated that understaffing in technical professions and customer service workloads are exacerbated due to this skills shortage.
