Macron underlines that detaining the head of Telegram isn't driven by political motivations.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, has spoken out against misinformation following the detention of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov. Macron underlined the autonomy of France's judicial system and stated that Durov's arrest is not a political move but an aspect of an independent investigation. "The judges will make the decision," Macron emphasized.
As reported by French media, Durov, who holds both Russian and French citizenship, was apprehended in Paris on Saturday. His arrest warrant alleges that Telegram's messaging service has been utilized for illicit activities such as money laundering, drug trafficking, and other criminal offenses. The Russian authorities have voiced their displeasure. Some even labeled the arrest as politically motivated, suggesting that it highlights the West's hypocrisy in regards to free speech.
However, Macron reiterated France's strong support for free speech. "Freedoms are upheld within a legal framework," he wrote, "ensuring the protection of citizens and respect for their fundamental rights, both on social media and in real life."
Initially, Durov's representatives were difficult to contact. Telegram insists that it adheres to EU laws and boasts a moderation system that matches industry standards and is consistently improving.
"It's ludicrous to blame a platform or its owner for the misuse of that platform," Telegram wrote on its platform. "We're eagerly waiting for a quick resolution to this matter."
Durov and his brother established Telegram after the Russian government clamped down on protests for democracy in 2011 and 2012.
The French President, Emmanuel Macron, highlighted that the judges will make the decision regarding Durov's case. Telegram, which operates under EU laws, insists on adhering to its moderation system that matches industry standards.
