Macron reproaches Netanyahu for "too many civilian casualties"
French President Macron calls on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to facilitate a ceasefire in the Gaza war. In a telephone call, he admonishes the head of government that a distinction must be made "between terrorists and the population".
French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to protect the civilian population in the Gaza Strip. In a telephone conversation with Netanyahu, Macron complained that there were "too many civilian casualties" in the Israeli military operation in the Palestinian territory, the Elysée Palace announced. He had reminded the Israeli Prime Minister of the need to "distinguish between terrorists and the population".
During the talks, Macron also reiterated his call for an "immediate humanitarian" pause in the fighting, which must lead to a ceasefire. With regard to the situation in the occupied West Bank, Macron reportedly expressed his "great concern about the increasing violence against Palestinian civilians".
He also condemned these attacks in a telephone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Elysée Palace added. Macron also called on the "Palestinian Authority and all countries in the region to condemn the terrorist attack carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7 unequivocally and with the utmost determination".
Hundreds of fighters from the radical Islamic group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 and committed atrocities there, mainly against civilians. According to Israeli figures, around 1,200 people were killed in Israel and around 240 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.
In response to the attack by Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, Israel launched massive attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip and ground troops also entered the Palestinian territory. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, around 13,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the Israeli attacks began around six weeks ago.
Emmanuel Macron urged Benjamin Netanyahu to ensure the safety of civilians during Israel's war in the Gaza Strip, expressing his concern over the high number of civilian casualties. The French President also emphasized the importance of distinguishing between terrorists and the population in their discussions.
Despite Hamas's terrorism leading to Israel's military intervention in the Gaza Strip, Macron urged the Palestinian Authority and regional countries to condemn the attack unequivocally and with firm determination.
