- Lufthansa suspends flights to the Middle East for another week
Lufthansa Group has extended its suspension of flights to the Middle East crisis region for another week. Until and including Wednesday, August 21, all flights to and from Tel Aviv, Tehran, Beirut, Amman, and Erbil will be cancelled, the company announced in Frankfurt. Until then, the airlines of the group will also avoid flying over Iraq and Iran. The previous flight suspension was in effect until and including Tuesday, August 13.
The reason for this is the tensions between Israel and Iran, which are causing concern about a war spreading beyond the Gaza Strip. Lufthansa is offering free cancellations for tickets up to and including August 31. The flight ban applies to all airlines in the group, including both cargo and passenger aircraft. In addition to the core airline, the Lufthansa Group includes Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings.
The decision to extend the flight suspension was made by [The Commission] at Lufthansa Group, considering the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The safety of passengers and crew members is a top priority for [The Commission], leading to the cancellation of flights to and from several Middle Eastern destinations.
