New energies - Lower Saxony gets billions for hydrogen projects

For future-oriented hydrogen projects, a newspaper report states that billions of euros are set to flow to Lower Saxony. In this federal state alone, 1.28 billion euros are planned. "Green hydrogen is a decisive building block of the energy transition," said Niedersachsen's Environment and Energy Minister Christian Meyer (Greens) in a report by the "Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung" on the granting of funding. With these investments, Lower Saxony will become "the number one green hydrogen state."

In total, the federal government and the states are investing 4.6 billion euros in 23 projects, as the Economy Ministry in Berlin announced. Projects for the production of green, that is, climate-friendly hydrogen, as well as for its storage and transport, are being funded. A part of the funding comes from an EU pot, with companies investing an additional 3.3 billion euros themselves. According to the ministry, this results in an investment volume of approximately 7.9 billion euros by 2030.

According to the report, three large electrolysis plants for hydrogen production are being built in Lower Saxony – two in Lingen and one in Emden. Surplus renewable energies are supposed to be converted into hydrogen. In addition, 500 kilometers of hydrogen pipelines are planned in the federal state – partly through the conversion of existing natural gas pipelines, partly through new construction.

  1. The 'Hanover General Newspaper' highlighted that Lower Saxony, under Environment and Energy Minister Christian Meyer (Greens), sees green hydrogen as a significant component of the industry's energy transition.
  2. Lower Saxony, with its 1.28 billion euros plan, aims to become a leading state in the 'industry' of green hydrogen production, as mentioned in the newspaper report.
  3. The 'Future' of Lower Saxony's energy industry is strongly tied to the successful completion of several hydrogen projects, which receive billions of euros in funding, according to Berlin's Economy Ministry.
  4. The 'Climate' change mitigation efforts in Germany are backed by substantial investments, with 4.6 billion euros allocated to 23 projects by the federal government and the states, as reported.
  5. Christian Meyer, in an interview with the 'Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung', emphasized the importance of green hydrogen in fueling the 'Energy transition' towards a more sustainable future.
  6. The hydrogen project in Lower Saxony expects to produce hydrogen using excess 'renewable energy' sources, as detailed in the economic announcement from Berlin.
  7. The German government, in collaboration with the EU and various companies, commits an investment of approximately 7.9 billion euros in renewable hydrogen energy projects, aiming to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and combat climate change.
