Lonely people and men are particularly often affected by over-indebtedness

Lonely people and men have been particularly affected by over-indebtedness in the past year. According to the Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, which announced this on a Wednesday, 51% of those who sought debt counseling in 2023 lived alone. On average, these people were in debt to the tune of 29,738 Euro - the average total debt of all was 31,749 Euro.

Statistics also showed differences between genders: Men were more and more heavily indebted than women. According to the data, 61% of insolvent single men had an average debt burden of 31,792 Euro, while 39% were women with an average debt of 26,464 Euro.

The most common causes of over-indebtedness among single households in the past year were illness, addiction, or an accident. This affected 24% of single households - among all those who sought debt counseling, it was 18%. Almost equally often, the loss of employment was the cause (19% of single households and 18% of all over-indebted persons).

People who sought debt counseling most frequently had debts with other public creditors, such as statutory pension and health insurance schemes and job centers. In second place were telecommunications companies, followed by self-employed individuals and the mail order business.

In contrast to women, solitary men in 2023 were found to carry a higher average debt burden due to overindebtedness, at 31,792 Euro. This statistic was revealed in light of the increasing overindebtedness among individuals, with 51% of those seeking debt counseling living solitarily, carrying an average debt of 29,738 Euro. The year saw various factors leading to overindebtedness, including job loss, accounting for 19% of cases in solitary households and 18% of all overindebted persons.
