London estimates number of Russian victims at 320,000
The number of Russian soldiers killed and wounded in the war in Ukraine is a great mystery. Estimates vary widely. Current figures from London are comparatively moderate. Nevertheless, the number of dead soldiers alone is in the high five figures.
According to British estimates, around 70,000 Russians have been killed in the war of aggression against Ukraine so far. According to the British Ministry of Defense, this includes 50,000 regular soldiers and 20,000 members of the Wagner private army. The founder of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who has since been killed, had himself once put the number of mercenaries killed in the battles for Bachmut in eastern Ukraine at 20,000. The number of wounded between the start of the war on February 24, 2022 and the end of November 2023 is estimated in London at 180,000 to 240,000 soldiers and 40,000 Wagner fighters.
"This gives an estimated total range of 290,000 to 350,000 casualties among Russian combatants. The mean value of the estimate is a total of 320,000 Russian casualties," it continued. Exact figures are difficult to obtain. Even in Russia, the total number of dead and wounded is probably not known, as there is an established culture of dishonest reporting within the military. The authorities did not provide any information on Ukrainian casualties.
The Ukrainian military, on the other hand, already puts the number of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine at more than 330,000. The figures cannot be verified either, but are considered to be massively inflated. The same applies to the numbers of destroyed Russian military equipment. The information provided by the independent Dutch portal Oryx is much more valid in this regard. Ukraine is also reluctant to provide information on its own killed and wounded soldiers.
Russia confirms death of senior officer
According to NATO estimates from the end of November, the number of Russian soldiers killed or wounded has exceeded the 300,000 mark. In the summer, the "New York Times" reported 120,000 Russian soldiers killed and 170,000 to 180,000 wounded, citing US government officials. For Ukraine, it was assumed that around 70,000 soldiers had been killed and 100,000 to 120,000 wounded.
However, there is currently no official confirmation of a fatality from the Russian military leadership. "The deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps of the Northern Fleet, Major General Vladimir Savadsky, was killed in action in the area of the special military operation," announced the governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, on his Telegram channel.
Ukrainian media had already reported on the death of the high-ranking officer last week. In the letter of condolence, Gusev spoke of a "heavy loss". Until August 2021, the general had led the 4th Kantemirov Guards Armored Division, with which the Voronezh region traditionally had good relations.
Savadski was 45 years old. Prior to the obituary for Savadski, the Russian military had confirmed the deaths of a total of six generals in Ukraine. According to Ukrainian sources, however, at least twelve Russian generals were killed in the war of aggression unleashed by Moscow.
