Life sentences after terrorist attack in Ankara leaves 103 dead
More than eight years after one of the deadliest terror attacks in Turkish history, which left over 100 people dead, ten individuals have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Nine of them were sentenced to life imprisonment for premeditated murder in relation to "activities of an armed terrorist organization," according to the state news agency Anadolu. Another defendant was sentenced to multiple life sentences, including for attempted coup and unlawful possession of explosives and weapons.
On October 10, 2015, two suicide bombers detonated themselves in the Turkish capital Ankara during a peace demonstration near the train station. The government holds the Islamic State terror group responsible, but the group has not claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack occurred only a few weeks before parliamentary elections. The pro-Kurdish opposition party HDP, which is now called Dem, was believed to be the target of the attack according to their own assessment.

After serving their life imprisonment sentences, the convicted terrorists might spend the remainder of their lives behind bars in Turkish prisons. Despite the passage of several years, the terror attack in Ankara continues to have a profound impact on Turkish society. The lifetime bans from political activities could potentially be imposed on some of the convicted individuals following their prison sentences.
