- Less children are delivered on weekend days and holiday periods.
Throughout the week, there's a marked increase in the number of infants being delivered compared to Saturdays and Sundays. Forecasts from 2023 indicate that an average of 2,037 newborns were welcomed into the world each day of the workweek, which is 28% more than the weekend average of 1,594 new babies per day. In a nutshell, an average of 1,899 fresh faces graced the world every day last year.
Remarkably, fewer infants were born on celebrated holidays - specifically, only 1,444 infants were reported in 2023 on both Easter and Christmas. The Federal Statistical Office did not provide any potential explanations for this disparity.
Summertime birth boom
Unsurprisingly, the most births occurred on July 10, 2023, with a whopping 2,310 newborns, and the least on December 25, with only 1,357.
Tracing back to the early 1980s, experts have detected a recurring trend: the highest number of births generally occur during the summer months. Bucking this trend slightly, 2023 exhibited the same pattern of highest birth numbers in July and August, but September didn't manage to join their ranks.
Despite the summertime birth boom, the number of infants born on celebrated holidays, such as Easter and Christmas, was significantly lower, only reaching 1,444 newborns in 2023. This holiday trend contrasts the increasing number of births throughout the rest of the year.
The decrease in births on holidays may suggest that families plan their deliveries around these celebrations to avoid disrupting family gatherings and celebrations.
