Lengthy prison terms for the slaying of journalist de Vries.
Three years ago, the brutal murder of renowned Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries left the nation stunned. He was fatally shot in the bustling streets of Amsterdam and unfortunately, he did not survive his injuries. Now, the Amsterdam Court has brought three men to justice for the heinous crime and sentenced them to lengthy prison terms. The District Attorney had pushed for life imprisonment.
The court has just convicted three individuals for the murder of the popular reporter, handing down sentences ranging from 20 to 28 years behind bars. The horrific act occurred almost three years ago in Amsterdam. In addition, the court sentenced four other defendants to prison terms of up to 14 years for aiding and abetting the crime. Two defendants were found not guilty.
The court was unequivocal in its decision, as the guilt of the three main accused was clear as day. These men had no regard for human life, declared the judges in the heavily-guarded, high-security Amsterdam court. The District Attorney had pushed for a life sentence.
De Vries, a prominent TV reporter, was gunned down at the age of 64 in the summer of 2019 in the heart of Amsterdam. His life came to an abrupt end shortly after the shooting due to his severe injuries. The incident elicited widespread disbelief and dismay across the country. Within days of the crime, two main suspects were in police custody. These were the 24-year-old shooter, Delano G., and the 38-year-old driver of the getaway vehicle, Kamil E. Both men were now handed down 28-year prison sentences. The third main suspect, Krystian M., who held the title of a "murder broker", was sentenced to 26 years in prison. The only defendant to admit his guilt and express remorse to the victim's family was M. The remaining suspects had declined to testify and invoked their right to silence. They still have the option of appealing the verdicts handed down to them.
As per the District Attorney, the notorious drug cartel tied to Ridouan Taghi was allegedly responsible for the murder. De Vries was believed to have close ties with the state witness in a major criminal trial involving Taghi and his associates. Earlier, the brother and lawyer of the state witness had met a similar fate. However, there is no concrete evidence linking Taghi's gang to the crime. Taghi himself was sentenced to life imprisonment in February, but not for the murder of de Vries.
