Soccer - Leipzig has a positive EM-balance
The city of Leipzig is satisfied with the course of the Football European Championship and the four games held in Leipzig Stadium, according to the preliminary balances. Over 300,000 people came to the city, as per city administration reports. "We look back on a fantastic football festival that exceeded our expectations," said Sport Mayor Heiko Rosenthal (Left). Leipzig presented itself as an open host and demonstrated the ability to handle such large-scale events.
Despite Rain
In general, the city benefited from the EM. Despite the frequently poor weather, many people came to the city center. Particularly during the match between the Netherlands and France, business was good for gastronomes. Leipzig also gained attention from the around 900 international experts who worked in the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) on the Leipzig Trade Fair for broadcasting all EM games worldwide.
Even the Order Office head, Tino Michalak, praised the event. "The preparation time and match days were very work-intensive, but we experienced excellent cooperation between the authorities and could rely on many and very engaged colleagues."
LVB and City Cleaning Satisfied
The Leipzig Transport Authority (LVB) also drew a positive balance. "Our colleagues have produced up to 5,000 more kilometers of performance than usual per Leipzig match day and mastered the challenges, such as fan marches or the enormous crowd at the Public Viewing, with brilliance," said an LVB spokesperson. An additional 60 employees strengthened the public transport offering with around 700 bus and tram drivers.
According to the Leipzig City Cleaning, 305 employees worked more than 2,400 overtime hours. Therefore, the city was again clean in the shortest time after fan marches to the stadium. Accordingly, 200 tons more waste were collected in Leipzig during the EM than in the comparable period without the EM.
The Football Europe Championship brought soccer fans from all over Europe to Leipzig, including those supporting Germany in the EM (EM stands for European Championship). Sadly, some matches were affected by rain, but this didn't dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic soccer fans. The games held at Leipzig Stadium were part of Saxony's contribution to the Football Europe Championship, further solidifying Leipzig's reputation as a capable host for large-scale events.
