At 75, Corbyn is starting over again politically - as a non-party backbencher in the House of Commons.

Left-wing ex-Labour leader Corbyn wins mandate

Without him, Labour party wins, with him they had lost: In his own constituency, Jeremy Corbyn managed to defend his seat in the British House of Commons elections.

The former leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, defended his seat in the British House of Commons elections. Corbyn ran as an independent candidate in his old constituency Islington North.

Under Corbyn's leadership, Labour suffered a crushing defeat against the Conservatives under then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the previous election in 2019. He had been the leader of the social democratic party from 2015 to 2020 and had led it far to the left. He enjoyed great popularity among young voters at one point. However, in his party's parliamentary faction, he was always a contentious figure.

His election as party leader was an expression of the crisis the party was going through at the time. Until then, Corbyn was mainly known as a left-wing backbencher. To this day, he is more of an activist than a politician. Many moderate Labour supporters were disappointed by his indifferent stance on Brexit. Later, he came under heavy criticism. Above all, he was accused of not taking a strong enough stance against anti-Semitic tendencies in his party. He himself was also accused of anti-Semitism because he referred to terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah as "friends." He later apologized for this.

In 2020, his Labour Party membership was suspended. When he announced that he would run as an independent candidate in this election, he was expelled from the party. Corbyn has held the parliamentary seat for Islington North since 1983. For the longest time in his parliamentary career, he was known as a rebel. He has now returned to this role.

In the 2015 British House of Commons election, the Labor Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, faced a significant challenge against the Conservative Party under Boris Johnson's leadership. Despite Corbyn's victory in his own constituency, the Labor Party suffered a substantial loss in the election. During his tenure as party leader, Corbyn's stance on Brexit and alleged anti-Semitic remarks drew criticism from within and outside the party.
