It's been nine years since the tragic death of Kurdish lawyer, Tahir Elci in Turkey, and a legal explanation is still lacking. Recently, a court in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir acquitted three policemen, who were previously accused of negligent homicide in the case. This ruling has received strong criticism from human rights activists.

Tahir Elci passed away on November 28, 2015 in Diyarbakir during a press conference. An unfortunate incident took place nearby, where two members of the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) shot and killed two police officers. As Elci spoke, the police opened fire, fatally injuring him. A bullet to the head ended his life.

Initially, the Turkish government insisted that Elci was shot by the escaped militants. Yet, a study by the research group "Forensic Architecture" from Goldsmiths University in London in 2019 suggested that the police were possibly responsible for Elci's death.

Amnesty International, a renowned human rights organization, harshly condemned the verdict: "This decision is a profound insult to justice. It has showcased the monumental incompetence of authorities to conduct a thorough, swift, unbiased, and impartial investigation into the murder of Tahir Elci."
