Law enforcement officials: Individual involved in shooting incident had mental health concerns
Initially, a 46-year-old individual allegedly brandished a firearm against another man and subsequently opened fire on law enforcement officers in his apartment. The officers responded with lethal force, resulting in his demise. Later, it was disclosed by the prosecutor's office that this deceased individual was under protective custody.
Apparently struggling with mental health issues, the 46-year-old man reportedly intimidated a 49-year-old with a gun on a caravan site in the morning. Thankfully, the victim managed to escape the attacker and contacted the authorities. The 49-year-old pursued the suspect, who fled to a residential building in Dreilindenstraße. Due to the suspect's refusal to open the door, the police entered the apartment using a search warrant.
The individual is said to have retaliated against the officers with gunfire as per statements from the police and prosecutor's office in the evening. In response, the officers resorted to returning gunfire, resulting in the man's death. A homicide investigation has commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the altercation. The means by which the man acquired the weapon remains unexplained, according to Sebastian Büchner.
Inspections revealed the man's apartment in Nikolassee, located in Berlin's southwest, to be in a state of disarray. The area primarily consists of detached houses and single-family homes. This particular building houses low-income housing, with around 100 studio apartments. A local resident reported that a primary school is adjacent to the property.
Given the escalating situation, the police decided to keep a close watch on the building for any potential threats. In the aftermath of the incident, the deceased individual's family contacted the police, expressing concern and seeking information outside the ongoing investigation.
