Law enforcement officers discharge weapons against an individual in Krefeld.
Authorities in Krefeld have apprehended a suspect involving an incident. The individual was reportedly harmed by law enforcement officers, according to a statement from a police representative. Details concerning the suspect's alleged activities were not provided. Unverified sources suggest the man ignited explosive devices in proximity to the cinema. The suspect's identity and motivation remain a mystery.
As per an article published in Bild, the man was allegedly responsible for detonating explosive devices at three separate locations. The first incident occurred around 8 p.m. when he approached the Federal Employment Agency and tossed an explosive device into the building. He then set fire to a car parked in front of the building and proceeded towards the central station. The first emergency call was placed at 7:50 p.m.
A nearby apartment building's rooftop was also compromised by an apparent fire. Police suspect the attacker started this fire before targeting the employment agency, as reported by Bild. Ultimately, the suspect was encountered by two officers when he entered the Cinemaxx cinema in the city center.
According to Bild, the two officers deployed their service weapons and shot the man within the cinema's entrance area. At least one bullet struck the man, resulting in severe injuries that led to his collapse. He was subsequently transported to a hospital, the newspaper reported.
The police claim there is no further danger to the public. Officials believe that the individual shot outside the Cinemaxx cinema in Krefeld acted alone, affirmed a spokesperson for the Essen police. The suspect has yet to injure anyone and is receiving medical treatment, as reported by WDR.
There is no indication of an active shooting situation, WDR stated, citing police information. Initially, media outlets suggested the possibility of a shooting rampage or attack. The Rheinische Post reported that priests were ministering to individuals inside the cinema. Mayor Frank Meyer was also reportedly present at the scene.
The station itself remained open, as witnessed by a journalist. People continued to enter and exit the station. Krefeld is home to an estimated 236,000 inhabitants.
The explosive device thrown at the Federal Employment Agency caused a small fire, adding to the chaos. In the aftermath of the incident, the man entered the Cinemaxx cinema and set another fire, creating a dangerous situation.
