- Law enforcement authorities are investigating a potential accidental blaze close to Leipzig.

Following the blaze on the colossal Ferris wheel at the Highfield Festival in proximity to Leipzig, law enforcement authorities are still probing the circumstances leading to the fire. No evidence of arson has surfaced, as stated by a representative in response to inquiries.

As of now, the police suspect the fire was accidental. A fault in the Ferris wheel machinery has been dismissed as the origin of the blaze. Witnesses are being solicited to clarify any potential negligent actions. Rumors suggesting a cigarette was the culprit were not substantiated by the police.

At approximately 21:00 on Saturday, one of the 24 gondolas on the Ferris wheel burst into flames. The flames then spread to another gondola. The festival was temporarily halted for about two hours.

65 Riders of the Ferris Wheel Seek Medical Attention

As per the Ferris wheel operator, the fire originated during a passenger exchange. Remarkably, at that moment, no passenger was inside the gondola.

Upon investigation, a fire expert discovered that materials beneath the Ferris wheel ignited for an unknown reason initially, and subsequently, the flames moved to the gondolas. As reported on Monday, the expert has concluded his on-site investigation. Further witness testimonies are being sought.

65 individuals requested medical attention post-incident. 16 individuals were hospitalized, with four suffering burns and another sustaining a fall-related injury. The majority of the injured were exposed to smoke. Some, including responders and at least four police officers, underwent examination for potential smoke inhalation. Fortunately, there were no life-threatening injuries. Both festival-goers and emergency responders, including police officers, were impacted.

Investigations continue, potentially lasting several weeks, or even months, as suggested by the police.

The commencement of the Highfield Festival at Stormthal Lake in proximity to Leipzig was on Thursday evening. As disclosed by the organizers, approximately 30,000 music enthusiasts attended concerts by notable artists.

Despite the expert's finding of an initial ignition beneath the Ferris wheel, the exact cause of the flames remains elusive. The wheel, a key attraction, will likely remain out of service until a definitive explanation for the incident is found.

In the aftermath of the fire, several parts of the Ferris wheel, including the burned gondolas, have beenpropositioned for further examination to determine if any faults or weaknesses contributed to the blaze.
