European Commission - Last speech before election: Von der Leyen gives herself fightingly
Ursula von der Leyen passionately advocated for a determined fight against demagogues and extremists in her application speech for a second term as EU Commission President before the Members of the European Parliament. Ursula von der Leyen criticized the journey of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to Russian President Vladimir Putin as appeasement towards a politician who started a war against Ukraine. It was not about a "peace mission," but an "appeasement mission," she said.
Concretely, von der Leyen announced initiatives for more competition and a stronger defense industry, as well as measures for fair income for farmers if re-elected by the Parliament. Von der Leyen stated that we are in a time of great fear and uncertainty. However, she is convinced that a strong Europe has grown to meet the challenges.
The vote on a second term for von der Leyen is scheduled for 13.00 hours. The result is expected around 15.00 hours.
