Last generation of activists cripple airport operations
Climate activists protest early in the morning at four German airports. They glue themselves to the runways. In Nuremberg and Cologne/Bonn, operations have to be stopped.
The climate initiative "Letzte Generation" started protests in several cities. In pairs, activists in orange vests reportedly gained access to the airports Berlin-Brandenburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Cologne-Bonn. There, they glued themselves to the runways, according to "Letzte Generation".
They "peacefully express their resistance by displaying banners with the slogans 'Oil kills' and 'Sign the treaty'," the organization reported in a statement. "The runways were not entered."
The actions began shortly before 5:00 AM at Berlin BER, with protests starting at the three airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg around 30 to 50 minutes later, according to the climate activists.
In Nuremberg, the airport's operations have been suspended indefinitely, according to a police spokesperson. Operations at Cologne/Bonn Airport are also currently suspended, a spokesperson for the airport said.
The climate activists from "Letzte Generation" also conducted protests at Cologne-Bonn Airport, leading to the temporary halt of operations there. The organization's actions in various German cities, including Cologne, aim to raise awareness about climate change and advocate for more environmentally friendly policies.
