Last generation occupied airports - Cologne/Bonn briefly ceases operations
Climate activists protest early in the morning at four German airports, gluing themselves to the runways. Operations had to be temporarily halted in Nuremberg and Cologne/Bonn.
Due to a police operation involving a protest by climate activists from the group "Last Generation", flights at Cologne/Bonn Airport have been temporarily suspended, a spokesperson for the airport confirmed. Unauthorized individuals gained access to the airside area of the airport in Cologne/Bonn. Similarly, flights at Nuremberg Airport have been suspended indefinitely, according to a police spokesperson.
The Federal Police in North Rhine-Westphalia confirmed that "two people" had glued themselves to an area leading to the runway. In total, three unauthorized individuals and a hole in the fence leading to the outer area were discovered.
Two activists from "Last Generation" in orange vests reportedly gained access to Berlin Brandenburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Cologne-Bonn airports, gluing themselves to the runways, according to the group. The activists "peacefully expressed their resistance by displaying banners with the slogans 'Oil kills' and 'Sign the treaty'," the organization reported. "The runways were not entered."
The actions began around 5:00 AM at Berlin BER, with protests starting at the three airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg around 30 to 50 minutes later, according to the climate activists.
The protest by climate activists focused on the issue of aviation's impact on the climate, as they aimed to raise awareness about the need to reduce carbon emissions. The current climate at these airports was disrupted due to these protests, causing temporary halts in operations.
