Last generation cripples several airports

Climate activists protest in the early morning at four German airports. They glue themselves to the runways, causing operations to be temporarily halted in Nuremberg and Cologne/Bonn.

Due to a police intervention following a protest action by climate activists from the group "Letzte Generation", Cologne/Bonn Airport temporarily suspended operations. A spokesperson for the airport confirmed this, stating that unauthorized individuals had gained access to the airside area of the airport in Cologne/Bonn. Operations resumed at 7:25 AM, with the small takeoff and landing runway now open.

North Rhine-Westphalia's Federal Police confirmed that "two persons" had glued themselves to an area leading to the takeoff and landing runway. In total, three unauthorized individuals and a hole in the fence leading to the outer area were discovered.

In Nuremberg, the police spokesperson stated that flights have been suspended indefinitely. According to the airport, operations have been impossible since 5:42 AM.

Two activists from "Letzte Generation" entered the airports in Berlin-Brandenburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, and Cologne-Bonn, wearing orange warning vests. They glued themselves to the runways, as reported by "Letzte Generation".

The activists "peacefully express their resistance by displaying banners with the inscriptions 'Oil kills' and 'Sign the treaty'," the organization reported. "The takeoff and landing runways were not entered."

According to the climate activists, the actions began shortly before 5:00 AM at Berlin BER. Around 30 to 50 minutes later, protests started at the three airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, and Baden-Württemberg.

Despite the temporary disruptions in operations at Nuremberg and Cologne/Bonn due to climate activists' actions, the climate remains a significant concern, prompting these protests. The climate activists argue that the actions they take, such as gluing themselves to runways, are a form of peaceful resistance against the negative impacts of aviation on the environment.
