Last generation blocks partial air traffic in Frankfurt
After the blocking of Cologne/Bonn Airport on Wednesday, the so-called Climate Liability groups immobilize the important Frankfurt Airport. Flights resumed a few hours later, however.
Due to an action by Climate Activists, the air traffic at Frankfurt Airport was temporarily halted in the morning, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Police. Flights have been partially resumed. "Flights are taking off and landing again," said an airport spokesperson. However, not all runways are being used fully yet. Several demonstrators had entered the airport grounds early in the morning and had glued themselves to various points around the runways.
Passengers were asked to stay away from Fraport for the time being and to check the status of their flights on the websites of the airlines in advance. According to the airport's website, several planes had been redirected to other airports in the morning. "We are doing everything we can to remove the Climate Activists from the premises," the Federal Police spokesperson said.
The group Last Generation claimed responsibility for the blockade. Six activists had managed to gain access and had reached various points around the runways. The group had blocked the air traffic at Cologne/Bonn Airport for approximately three hours the previous day. Activists had glued themselves to a runway at Cologne/Bonn Airport.
"Out of Fossils by 2030"
In a statement, the group reiterated their demand from the previous day to the German government, "to co-create and sign a legally binding international agreement that regulates the global exit from Oil, Gas and Coal by 2030."
The six demonstrators had cut openings in the fence with small pliers and had walked, driven on carts, and skated to the locations, according to the statement. The action was part of international protests in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, Austria, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Spain, and Norway. "We have come together internationally: Out of Fossils by 2030!", it said in a post on X. "The further promotion and combustion of Oil, Gas and Coal is a threat to our existence."
On Wednesday, similar protests had already taken place in several countries. Nine activists from the group Just Stop Oil were arrested at London Heathrow Airport. Twelve activists blocked the Oslo Airport in Norway. Reports of similar incidents also came from Spain and Finland.
Last Generation plans further actions: on August 3 in Mannheim, Halle and Augsburg, and on September 25 in Kassel.
During the series of international climate protests, the group Last Generation disrupted air traffic at Frankfurt's Main River Airport, building upon their successful disruption at Cologne/Bonn Airport the day prior. They emphasized their demand for an international agreement to phase out Oil, Gas, and Coal by 2030, a stance they also advocated during the protests in several other countries, including the USA, Great Britain, and Norway.
As part of the climate protection movement, Last Generation staged protests at various airports, calling for Main River Frankfurt to join the global effort in protecting the environment from the harmful effects of fossil fuels. Theactivists' actions included gluing themselves to runway facilities, showcasing their determination to raise awareness about this pressing issue to the Last Generation.
