Larissa's deep waters are pouring over Germany

Larissa's deep waters are pouring over Germany

A new weather situation with many thunderstorms brings dangers from heavy rain, hail, and storm gusts. Particularly, the rainfall amounts are noteworthy. Locally, up to 100 liters of rain per square meter can fall.

The blame is quickly cleared: Low "Larissa" is moving exactly over the center of Germany and is hitting large parts of the country with its rain showers and thunderstorms. It will gradually leave us on Friday - then the low will move eastward.

The thunderstorm risk on Thursday and Friday, while not reaching the highest category, is still serious - especially since a large part of Germany could be affected. Only in the far north are the prospects more relaxed - but even there, forecasts show clouds, showers, and thunderstorms. At least: The worst will be over by the weekend. The details:

On Thursday, it will be particularly bad in the country's center, with the eastern center (Thuringia, Saxony, perhaps also South Brandenburg) coming into focus in the evening. Particularly large rainfall amounts can fall there. But also further west and south, small "water bombs" with heavy rain and hail will form in the moist air.

In the night, especially the east needs to be careful, where it can also rain for a long time and very intensively. In the north, it will remain drier, and in the west, it will calm down during the night. Along the Rhine, it will partly not cool down below 20 degrees - the third tropical night in a row. In the north, it will be significantly cooler with up to 12 degrees.

Thunderstorms and showers at the weekend

Before Low "Larissa" leaves, it will also be very unsettled on Friday. The thunderstorm low will turn with the rain-intensive core over Saxony slowly towards the Polish border. Further west and south, the situation will briefly calm down with some sunshine, before new showers and thunderstorms form - which can also be quite intense.

In the north, after some thicker clouds and a few drops in the morning, it will mostly be dry again with some sunshine. It will be friendliest and completely dry from the Lower Rhine to the North Sea. The highest values will be 20 to 24 degrees at the coasts, 20 degrees in the eastern highlands, and up to 28 degrees at the Rhine. It will remain often muggy.

Will the summer be sunny and carefree again after "Larissa"? We still have to expect some thunderstorms and showers at the weekend. Moreover, it will remain muggy in places. On the other hand, there will be many sunny sections both on Saturday and Sunday. It could be really nice according to the current forecast on Monday.

Given the extreme weather conditions, emergency services should be prepared for potential flooding and damage caused by the heavy rainfall of up to 100 liters per square meter in affected areas. Furthermore, agricultural sectors may need to take precautions against crop damage due to the severe thunderstorms and hail.
