Drug trade - Largest Cocaine Find in Paraguayan History
Paraguayan security forces have secured the largest amount of Cocaine in the history of the South American country. Over four tonnes of illicit substance were discovered in sugar sacks in a container at the port of the capital Asunción, according to the drug enforcement agency, on a Tuesday (local time). The shipment was reportedly destined for Antwerp, Belgium. The seized cocaine was estimated to have a value of around 220 million Euros in Europe, as per the Paraguayan authorities.
Besides the US, Europe is the largest market for Cocaine from South American production countries Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. In the previous year, over 300 tonnes of Cocaine were seized in European ports. Alone in Antwerp, investigators secured a record 121 tonnes of Cocaine - about ten percent more than the previous year.
Currently, according to the German Customs Office, the smuggling is shifting from North America to Europe, presumably due to the higher prices that can be achieved there. The typical route from Colombia via Middle America to the US or via Ecuador to Europe is being increasingly surpassed in importance by the route via Paraguay, Argentina or Brazil to Europe, according to the latest assessment by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
