- Large, unpolished diamond discovered in Botswana
A colossal diamond, roughly the size of an avocado, has been unearthed in a mine situated in Botswana. The unpolished gemstone, carrying a hefty 2,492 karats, has been recognized as one of the largest diamonds globally. The mining organization Lucara Diamond Corp, which runs the Karowe mine in northeastern Botswana, where the gem was discovered, revealed its weight. As of yet, the company has not disclosed any details concerning the diamond's quality or worth. Nonetheless, Lucara CEO William Lamb labeled the stone as "among the largest uncut diamonds ever retrieved" and "of notable quality". Botswana, a landlocked nation in southern Africa, ranks among the foremost diamond producers worldwide. In the summer of 2021, Lucara stumbled upon a 1,174.76 karat rough diamond in Botswana itself, within the Karowe mine, which, at the time, was renowned as the third largest diamond globally. The largest recorded diamond to date was found back in 1905 in South Africa's Cullinan, close to its capital, Pretoria. The 3,106 karat gemstone was later fashioned and now forms part of the British Crown Jewels.
The discovery of this enormous diamond has sparked interest in other potential gemstone finds in the Karowe mine. Despite the lack of information about its quality and worth, analysts are speculating about its potential impact on Botswana's diamond market.
