Kubicki to the Greens: Get out of cloud cuckoo land on migration
Ahead of the Green Party conference, FDP deputy leader Wolfgang Kubicki has called on his coalition partner to be more realistic in its migration policy. The Greens' agreement to end payments for private sea rescues in the Mediterranean is "the first small step out of colorful cloud cuckoo land towards a reasonable migration policy," Kubicki told the German Press Agency in Berlin. "I expect further energetic steps at the upcoming federal delegates' conference and an unequivocal confirmation of the latest federal-state agreements on migration."
Kubicki, who is also Vice President of the German Bundestag, was "pleased and grateful" that the coalition had developed a common understanding that private sea rescue operations in the Mediterranean would no longer be financed with state funds in the coming year. "Because it was never possible to convincingly counter the impression that the criminal trafficking gangs based their business precisely on this," said Kubicki. "In addition, the question arises as to why private sea rescue in Germany is financed exclusively by voluntary contributions, while the taxpayer is supposed to pay for this in the Mediterranean."
The Greens are meeting in Karlsruhe this Thursday evening for their federal delegates' conference. It will last until Sunday. Asylum and migration will be a focus of the first evening.
At the Green Party conference this Thursday, Kubicki expects the Greens to take further steps towards a reasonable migration policy, following their agreement to halt private sea rescues in the Mediterranean. The FDP deputy leader believes the Greens should continue in this direction, as outlined in his criticism of their previous policies as being in a "colorful cloud cuckoo land."
