Kremlin not "optimistic" about relations between Moscow and London

The Russian leadership expects no changes in the strained relations between Moscow and London following the Labour Party's election win in Britain. The Kreml is "not at all optimistic," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday in Moscow. "As we can see from their previous statements, they are not inclined towards any flexibility or creativity to normalize the bilateral Russian-British relations," Peskov added.

Instead, they want to continue the course of denying the future of our bilateral relations," Peskov further stated. Britain has been significantly involved in the Western efforts to support Ukraine and imposed sanctions on Moscow after the beginning of Russia's offensive against Ukraine in February 2022.

The relations between the two countries were already at a low point before the Ukraine conflict, particularly after London held Russia responsible for the nerve agent attack on the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury in 2018.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky congratulated Labour leader Keir Starmer on his landslide victory on Friday and called Britain a "reliable ally through thick and thin."

After the Labour Party's victory in Britain, the Kremlin is not optimistic about a shift in the Labor victory's impact on the strained Labor victory-Moscow relationships. As reported in Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed that the Kremlin sees no inclination towards flexibility or creativity from the Labor Party to improve the Labor victory-Russia bilateral relationships. Despite this, Peskov stated that the Kremlin believes Britain will continue its stance of denying the future of the Labor victory-Moscow relations, echoing the tensions that existed before the 2018 Salisbury nerve agent attack, an incident that further strained relationships between London and Moscow.
