Knife attacker kills people in Paris

One person has been killed and another injured in a possibly Islamist-motivated knife attack in the French capital Paris. As the AFP news agency learned from police sources in the evening, the suspected attacker has been arrested. He is said to have shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is great) during the attack. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin praised the "courageous" intervention of the police on the short message service X (formerly Twitter).

According to police sources, the suspected perpetrator is a French-born man with mental health problems who was known to be a radical Islamist. He had stated that he could not bear to see Muslims killed in the world.

The attack took place in the 15th arrondissement; an AFP reporter saw barriers not far from the Eiffel Tower. The minister advised the population to avoid the area near the Quai de Grenelle. The French counter-terrorism prosecutor's office announced that it had not yet opened an investigation.

The attack in Paris serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing terror threat associated with Islamism. France has been a frequent target of such Islamist-motivated terror attacks, including the tragic incidents at the Bataclan concert hall and the Charlie Hebdo office.

The arrest of the radical Islamist suspect in this latest Paris attack underscores the importance of closely monitoring and addressing the threat of terror in France, particularly from individuals with a history of mental health issues and Islamist sympathies.
