Life on the Islands - KLM-Chef: Sylt is not just missing affordable housing

Payable apartments on Sylt, the largest German North Sea island, have been rare for years. "We don't just need more affordable living space, but attractive living space, as the people on Sylt no longer want to live in garages or basements," said Marcus Kopplin, head of the Municipal Property Management (KLM), to the German Press Agency. The demands of some tenants have reportedly changed, for example in terms of a modern bathroom.

The KLM, which is owned by the Sylt municipality with its districts Westerland, Tinnum, Rantum, Munkmarsch, Morsum, Keitum and Archsum, rents out over 1000 apartments on the island, which cost a minimum of €7 per square meter in rent. The demand is high. Near the train station in Westerland, a project called "Westhedig" with 189 new apartments is currently being built, which, according to Kopplin, is the largest socially-supported housing project in Schleswig-Holstein.

More than 4000 people roll daily according to the Federal Employment Agency from the nearby mainland over the Hindenburg Dam to work on Sylt. Not a few of them would like to live on the island, but cannot find an apartment there. The same applies to the neighboring islands of Föhr and Amrum for permanent living space.

  1. Interested individuals seeking a change of living environment might find appealing options in the "Westhedig" project, currently under construction in Westerland, the largest socially-supported housing project in Schleswig-Holstein's Westerland commune, as reported by the German Press Agency.
  2. The Westerland commune, part of Schleswig-Holstein and home to the Sylt municipality, with its districts such as Westerland, Tinnum, and others, has a high demand for affordable, modern living spaces, as indicated by Marcus Kopplin, head of the Municipal Property Management (KLM).
  3. Tourists and leisure seekers are drawn to the North Sea Island of Sylt, which has limited payable apartments, as per Marcus Kopplin of KLM, stressing the need for more attractive living spaces beyond the traditional basements and garages.
  4. The real estate market on Sylt, the largest German North Sea Island, is undergoing a shift as society's demands for modern living spaces, such as modern bathrooms, are influencing the needs of tenants, according to head of the Municipal Property Management (KLM) Marcus Kopplin.
  5. A significant number of commuters from the nearby mainland cross the Hindenburg Dam daily to work on Sylt, highlighting the potential for KLM, a Sylt commune-owned organization, to provide living space solutions for the growing workforce and tourism industry on the North Sea Island.
  6. With the expansion of tourism on Sylt, KLM, a Schleswig-Holstein-based real estate management firm, looks towards partnerships with airlines, such as KLM, to attract potential residents and investors to the beautiful North Sea Island, offering a unique leisure and living experience.
