Kim's sister insults South Korea as 'scum'

In response to balloon-borne trash from North Korea, South Korea sends leaflets and USB sticks over the border. Kim Jong Un's sister is furious and threatens severe consequences.

The influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has condemned South Korea over the latest balloon-borne propaganda actions, threatening retaliation. She was reportedly informed that the latest cargo of "filthy leaflets" was found on North Korean territory along the border, according to the state news agency KCNA. Seoul must be prepared to "pay a heavy price".

South Korea, despite repeated warnings, continues to "play this crude and filthy game", Kim Yo Jong reportedly added. The North Korean army will now "conduct a comprehensive search, burn and dispose of the found waste".

In recent weeks, South Korea has reacted strongly to hundreds of balloons filled with trash sent from Pyongyang over the border. They contained items such as cigarette butts, plastic, animal waste, and toilet paper. In response, South Korean activists sent balloons with leaflets and USB sticks into North Korea.

Agreement suspended

Due to the escalating tensions, South Korea suspended a military agreement with North Korea from 2018. The agreement aims to reduce tensions on the Korean Peninsula and prevent unintended escalation, particularly along the heavily fortified border. Additionally, the South Korean government resumed propaganda broadcasts over loudspeakers along the border.

Relations between North and South Korea are currently at a low point. North Korea's leader Kim has announced plans to expand weapons development - including tactical nuclear weapons. In response, South Korea and the US have strengthened their defense cooperation.

  1. The escalation of the North Korea Conflict, triggered by South Korea's continuation of sending balloons withleaflets and USB sticks, has led Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, to warn of severe consequences.
  2. Amidst the ongoing tension between the two Koreas, North Korea's army, following Kim Yo Jong's instructions, plans to conduct a comprehensive search, burn, and dispose of the South Korean balloons carrying propaganda materials, as a direct response to the North Korea Conflict.
