Kim Jong Un stations armed forces on South Korean border

On Tuesday, North Korea announces the successful launch of a satellite into space. Neighboring South Korea is concerned about possible use for espionage and suspends parts of a peace agreement. Now the situation threatens to escalate.

North Korea completely suspends a five-year-old agreement with South Korea to reduce military tensions and declares that it will station more weapons and more armed forces on the border with the South. "We will withdraw the (...) measures taken to prevent military tensions and clashes in all areas such as land, sea and air, and deploy armed forces and advanced military equipment in the border areas," the North Korean Defense Ministry announced, according to South Korea's Yonhap news agency.

South Korea had declared on Wednesday that it would partially suspend the 2018 military agreement and resume surveillance measures along the border. This followed the launch of a spy satellite by North Korea. After two failed attempts, North Korea successfully launched a spy satellite into space on Tuesday, according to state media. As reported by the North Korean state news agency KCNA, a carrier rocket carrying the "Malligyong-1" satellite was launched in North Phyongan province and put into orbit.

The General Staff of the South Korean army confirmed the satellite's entry into orbit on Wednesday. So far, however, it has not been possible to determine whether the satellite is working, it said. On Wednesday, KCNA reported that Kim had viewed images of military bases in the US territory of Guam in the Pacific after the satellite launch.

In response to South Korea's suspension of part of the peace agreement due to North Korea's satellite launch, suspected for espionage purposes, North Korea's Defense Ministry announces the deployment of more weapons and armed forces on the border with South Korea, threatening an escalation of the North Korea conflict. Following the successful missile test of a spy satellite by North Korea, Kim Jong Un reportedly reviews images of military bases in the US territory of Guam.
