Kiev wants to be behind attacks on Russian railroad
The Baikal-Amur Main Line is an important railroad line in Russia and is used for trade with China. Now two trains have caught fire on the line. In Kiev, there is talk of a successful operation by its own secret service.
Ukraine has claimed responsibility for two attacks on Russian fuel trains in Siberia. "The Russians fell into the trap of the (Ukrainian secret service) SBU twice," according to Ukrainian law enforcement authorities. The first attack took place on Thursday night in the Severomuisk tunnel in the Buryatia region. Four explosive devices were detonated while a train was passing through.
A section over which train traffic had been diverted after the first attack was then targeted. "Another fuel train exploded on the Baikal-Amur Main Line" as it drove "over a 35-metre-high bridge", the report continued.
It was "the second step of the SBU's special operation to decommission this important railroad line", according to Ukrainian law enforcement authorities. The SBU did not wish to comment on this. On Thursday, Russian Railways only reported a fire in a train that was transporting fuel in the Severomuisk tunnel. Train traffic had been diverted via another section.
No official information on the second incident was published by the Russian side. The Basa channel on the Telegram online service, which is close to the Russian security services, reported "sabotage" that had caused explosions on two trains "in the same area" in Buryatia. The authorities had launched an investigation into a "terrorist act". The channel also published two videos showing burning tank wagons.
At more than 15 kilometers, the Severomuisk Tunnel is the longest railroad tunnel in Russia and is located on the Baikal-Amur Mainline. The railroad line serves as a relief route for the Trans-Siberian Railway and is important for trade between Russia and China and is also to be used for military supplies.
China might express concern over the ongoing disruptions on the Baikal-Amur Main Line, given its significance for their trade with Russia. Russia's secret services are scrutinizing the series of mysterious attacks on their railroad, including the incident in the Severomuisk tunnel and the subsequent incidents, which Ukraine's secret service, the SBU, has claimed responsibility for.
