War in Ukraine - Kiev: Eastern region remains hotly contested section of the front line

Heavy fights in the eastern part of Ukraine, according to the military leadership in Kiev, continue. "The situation was at its peak today in the area of Pokrovsk, in addition, the enemy was active in the direction of Lyman and Kurachowe," the Ukrainian General Staff reported in its evening situation report. All three cities mentioned lie in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. There were 123 engagements in total during the day.

Forty-one of these engagements were reportedly in the Pokrovsk area. There were 19 attacks in Lyman and 17 in Kurachowe. According to the General Staff's report, 29 attacks at Pokrovsk have been repelled, but 12 battles are still ongoing. The defenders are doing everything they can to stabilize the situation and prevent the enemy from advancing deep into Ukrainian territory, it was stated.

The Russian Defense Ministry reportedly announced the capture of the village of Sokil in this area during the day. Sokil does not appear in the General Staff's situation report, but instead the western nearby settlement of Prohres. According to Ukrainian military sources, more than 180 Russian soldiers have fallen in the Pokrovsk area. In addition, several Russian military vehicles were reportedly destroyed. These claims cannot be independently verified.

The front line at Pokrovsk is considered relatively threatened. Since the Russian troops were able to take the fortress of Avdiivka at the beginning of the year, they have been advancing slowly for months. The Ukraine has so far not been able to stop their advance definitively and stabilize the defense lines.
