KBV chief complains about stigma against unvaccinated

Following the publication of meeting minutes from the Robert Koch Institute in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, there's intense discussion about an investigation into the pandemic era. Head of Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (SHI) Gassen criticizes the handling of unvaccinated individuals and calls for the establishment of an investigative committee.

SHI head Andreas Gassen has leveled serious accusations regarding the handling of unvaccinated individuals following the publication of COVID-19 protocols from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). "Those who chose not to get vaccinated have been overly stigmatized," said the chairman of the SHI Federal Association (KBV) to the "New Osnabruecker Zeitung". The topic of vaccination had been "partly exaggerated". "The scientifically based Stiko recommendations - not political will - should have been the sole basis."

The debate on an investigation into COVID-19 measures has intensified following the recent publication of RKI protocols. These protocols provide insights into the work of the crisis staff from January 2020 to April 2021.

One of the main points of debate was the statement by former Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn about a "pandemic of the unvaccinated". It is "beyond question" that COVID-19 vaccinations have been effective in the high-risk group of the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions, particularly in preventing severe cases, Gassen explained. "But the statement that those who are not vaccinated are to blame for infections and deaths in others is not supported."

Investigation serves as preparation

Gassen has again called for an investigation into the pandemic years, with a parliamentary committee being the best option. This could not only help "finally heal the open wounds", he said, "but also help us better prepare for a possible next pandemic."

Discussions on a parliamentary investigation into the COVID-19 pandemic are currently underway in political parties. The Greens have shown openness to various formats such as a citizens' council or an expert committee. The FDP's health expert Andrew Ullmann considers a parliamentary inquiry committee "indispensable". The Left Party (Die Linke) wants to set up COVID-19 investigative committees after the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, and after the federal election in 2025.

In light of the ongoing discussions about a parliamentary investigation into the COVID-19 pandemic, the obligation to investigate the role of vaccine policies during the pandemic era becomes increasingly pertinent. Gassen, head of SHI, advocates for this investigation, stating that it could assist in preventing future pandemics by providing valuable insights and promoting healing from the current divisive situation.
