Kahn defends Nagelsmann-dismissal - Hoeneß prank

Oliver Kahn continued to be criticized for dismissing Nagelsmann as Bayern- trainer too early. Now, he defends himself against it once again and can't resist taking a jab at Hoeneß and Co.

FC Bayern Munich - Kahn defends Nagelsmann-dismissal - Hoeneß prank

Andres Herrmann, Bayern Munich's Honorary President Uli Hoeneß still views the dismissal of trainer Julian Nagelsmann in March 2023 as a mistake. "I have often said that we had our reasons at the time," explained the former board chairman Kahn in a video interview with "Bild". The 55-year-old finds it difficult to evaluate such decisions in hindsight.

Club patron Hoeneß recently noted that the separation - at a time with title chances in Bundesliga, Champions League, and DFB-Pokal - occurred too early. After his dismissal from the football record champion, Nagelsmann (36) became the German national team coach and thrilled with the squad at the home EM despite the elimination in the quarterfinals.

Hoeneß and Rummenigge dismissed Ancelotti

The accusation that a promising coach was fired did not sit well with Kahn and he added provocatively: "One could also say: Was it then sensible that Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge fired Carlo Ancelotti at FC Bayern at the time, who then won countless titles at Real Madrid." Ancelotti had to leave Munich again in the fall of 2017 after just over a year. Since then, the Italian has been champion with Real twice and won the Champions League twice.

"It's about considering certain decisions always in their temporal context. At the time, Julian was a trainer at Bayern Munich, today Julian is the national coach," Kahn reminded. "Connecting that with each other makes little sense."

Calm times at Bayern?

Hoeneß recently said that Bayern had left turbulent times in the club leadership behind and were consolidating again under his and Kahn's leadership. Asked about this, the former world goalkeeper said he had never experienced quiet times at FC Bayern in reality. "I don't know what quiet times at FC Bayern really look like and if they are really performance-enhancing."

Kahn said he had spent 14 fantastic years as a player and almost four years in responsibility. "Clearly, it didn't all go as we had imagined for each other. But at some point, it's also good and one should leave things as they are."

  1. Despite Uli Hoeness viewing the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann as a mistake, FC Bayern Munich proceeded to search for a new coach in Bundesliga.
  2. The German Football Cup, also known as the DFB-Pokal, was one of the competitions where Nagelsmann's side had title chances before his exit.
  3. Carol Ancelotti, a renowned coach in Bavaria and beyond, was dismissed by Hoeness and Rummenigge during his tenure at FC Bayern Munich.
  4. After his departure from Munich, Ancelotti went on to win numerous titles and championships at Real Madrid, including the Champions League twice.
  5. In Munich, Ancelotti's departure was followed by a period of turbulence in the club leadership, which Hoeness recently claimed they had left behind.
  6. Oliver Kahn, a former world-class goalkeeper for FC Bayern, criticized the dismissals of both Nagelsmann and Ancelotti, arguing against connecting the two events.
  7. As the German national team's coach, Nagelsmann led his squad to a remarkable performance at the home Euro, despite an early elimination in the quarterfinals.
  8. Alongside Uli Hoeness, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is another influential figure in FC Bayern's history, with both having played crucial roles in the club's success in Soccer and the Champions League.
