- Juvenile Giant Pandas Residing at Berlin Zoo
The Berlin Zoo has introduced two fresh panda babies, who entered the world on Thursday at 1:03 PM and 2:19 PM, as per the zoo's announcement. The duo is in good health and is being doted on round the clock by their mother, Meng Meng, and the skilled panda team. Fingers are crossed for the crucial initial days.
The newborns weigh 169 grams and 136 grams, respectively, and measure approximately 14 centimeters in length, which is roughly comparable to a pet-sized guinea pig. They are presently bald, deaf, blind, and have a pinkish hue. Their distinctive black and white fur will develop later.
Dr. Andreas Knieriem, the zoo's veterinarian and director, expressed relief at the healthy birth of the cubs in a press statement. "The little ones seem energetic, and Meng Meng is exhibiting the true essence of 'motherly love' towards her young ones - she's nurturing them so tenderly," he stated.
Meng Meng had been artificially inseminated on March 26. On August 11, two heartbeats were identified through ultrasound, and just eleven days later, the cubs arrived. The gestation period was 149 days.
As of now, Meng Meng and her cubs will remain confined to the panda enclosure and will not be visible to zoo visitors. The father, Jiao Qing, is not involved in the cubs' care.
