Juso candidates announce tough stance against Scholz
Chancellor Olaf Scholz must be prepared for stronger opposition from the SPD's young generation. The two candidates for the chairmanship of the Young Socialists, Sarah Mohamed and Philipp Türmer, made this clear in the newspapers of the Funke media group.
"We have to be louder, more left-wing and more critical and push the SPD and the Chancellor forward," said Mohamed. "The relationship will become very cool between the Jusos and Olaf Scholz," she added. Opposing candidate Türmer told the Funke newspapers: "I think it is urgently necessary for us Jusos to be much more critical of the Chancellor and his line from now on. Olaf Scholz must be prepared for this."
Scholz stays away from Juso congress
The Jusos are meeting in Braunschweig from Friday to Saturday for their national congress. Mohamed and Türmer are running to succeed the current Juso chairwoman Jessica Rosenthal. The election is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Scholz had declined an invitation to the Juso congress for scheduling reasons. Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, however, will be there, as will party leader Saskia Esken and General Secretary Kevin Kühnert.
Mohamed and Türmer criticized the Social Democrats' migration policy in particular. "The SPD, Olaf Scholz and Nancy Faeser have crossed red lines on the asylum and migration issue," said Mohamed. "The SPD must not take part in racist agitation against migrants and those seeking protection," she warned. There will be "fierce opposition" to this from the Jusos.
Türmer lamented: "We social democrats should never step down on the weakest with our policies." This betrays social democratic values. He accused not only Interior Minister Faeser of this, but also the Chancellor, who sets the guidelines for government policy.
The SPD's youth association has around 70,000 members. With 49 members, it also represents almost a quarter of the parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
In response to Chancellor Olaf Scholz's policies, both Juso candidates, Sarah Mohamed and Philipp Türmer, have expressed their intent to be more critical and push the SPD and Chancellor forward. Mohamed stated, "We have to be louder, more left-wing and more critical," while Türmer urged, "It is urgently necessary for us Jusos to be much more critical of the Chancellor and his line."
